When people search for "near me" or for a service in their city, Google shows a map with three businesses before any regular results. Local SEO is how you get into that list and the results below it. This checklist covers the steps that make the biggest difference for small businesses in India.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local ranking factor you control.
- Claim and verify your business at business.google.com.
- Choose the most specific primary category (for example "Software company" rather than "Company"), then add relevant secondary categories.
- Fill in everything: opening hours, phone, website, services with descriptions, products, service areas and attributes.
- Add real photos of your office, team and work, and keep adding them over time.
- Post updates regularly: offers, new services, events and articles.
- Answer questions in the Q&A section and add common questions yourself.
2. Keep your name, address and phone (NAP) consistent
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, social media and directories. Inconsistent details (old addresses, different phone numbers, abbreviations used in some places only) confuse search engines and customers.
3. List your business in relevant directories
Add or correct your listing on the directories your customers actually use. In India, that often includes Justdial, Sulekha and IndiaMART, alongside Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, industry associations and your chamber of commerce. Quality and accuracy matter more than quantity.
4. Earn reviews, and respond to them
- Ask every satisfied customer for a Google review, with a direct link from your Business Profile, sent by WhatsApp or email right after a successful job.
- Respond to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. It breaks Google's policies and can get your profile suspended.
5. Make your website local-friendly
- Show your full address, phone and hours on every page (usually in the footer) and on a contact page with a map link.
- Create a page for each main service, and, if you serve several cities, a genuinely useful page for each location rather than copies with the city name swapped.
- Mention your city and area naturally in page titles and content where it is relevant.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data (schema.org) with your address, phone and opening hours, so search engines can read them reliably.
- Make the site fast and mobile-friendly. Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data.
- Add click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons so visitors can contact you in one tap.
6. Publish useful local content
Write articles that answer the questions your customers ask before they buy: costs, comparisons, how-to guides and checklists. Helpful content earns links and shows search engines you are an authority in your field and area.
7. Earn local links
Links from local organisations carry weight: business associations, suppliers and partners, local news, events you sponsor, and colleges you work with. One genuine local link is worth more than dozens of low-quality directory links.
8. Measure what's working
- Google Search Console: submit your sitemap, check which searches show your site, and fix indexing problems.
- Business Profile performance: track calls, direction requests and website clicks from your profile.
- Google Analytics: see which pages turn visitors into enquiries.
Review these monthly and do more of what brings enquiries.
How long does local SEO take?
Profile improvements can show results within weeks; stronger rankings for competitive searches usually take a few months of consistent work on reviews, content and links.
